CJS Grants

The UCI Center for Jewish Studies invites applications for research, language study, and conference travel grants. Graduate students working on any topic related to Jewish Studies, including Holocaust studies and modern Israel are eligible. 

Graduate Student Grants can be used for research and conference travel, including airfare, lodging, and ground transportation; conference registration and meals that are part of the conference program. Grant funds can also be used to pay for research expenses such as archival and copying fees, purchase of research materials not available through Interlibrary Loan (ILL), and tuition for language or methods training in pursuit of their graduate research. Funds cannot be used for per diem while traveling or equipment purchases. Maximum award: $2,000.

To apply for a research, language study or methodology training grant, submit a narrative description of no more than two pages about the research project or training and how it fits into your scholarly trajectory. If applying to support language study, explain how it is related to your research.

To apply for conference travel, submit a copy of the abstract of the paper to be presented at the conference, evidence that the paper has been accepted.

New Horizons in Jewish Studies Graduate Essay Prize,
University of California, Irvine

The Center for Jewish Studies at the University of California, Irvine invites submissions for its annual New Horizons in Jewish Studies Graduate Essay Prize. Advanced graduate students at universities in North America and those with a Ph.D. awarded no earlier than 2019 are eligible. In order to participate, submit an unpublished essay on any topic related to Jewish Studies. The winner will receive a $1,000 award and will be invited to present a public lecture on the topic of their essay at UC Irvine in the spring quarter, with a local respondent from the student’s field of studies. The program will cover travel expenses and hotel accommodation. Essays should be in English and 5,000-8,000 words long.
