In accordance with UC Regents Policy 4408, the UCI History Department adopted the following resolution with a vote of 24 Yes, 0 No, 2 Abstain at a department meeting held on 02/24/2025.
As a preface, we affirm that all Public and Discretionary Statements will comply with applicable laws and university and campus policies regarding, e.g. privacy and personnel issues; codes of conduct; anti-violence, anti-racism, and anti-harassment; intellectual property; conflicts of interest; use of technology; and required neutrality with regard to political campaigns.
- All Discretionary Statements shall be posted on a designated webpage and archived in accordance with normal procedures. An announcement with link will be posted on the departmental home page.
- All Discretionary Statements shall include, normally at the end, the following disclaimer: “This statement should not be taken as the position of the university, or the campus, as a whole.”
- The procedure for issuing a Discretionary Statement is the following:
a. A proposal to issue a statement is made and seconded by Senate Faculty. Discussion will occur in a closed faculty meeting with sufficient opportunity for all faculty members in attendance to participate and explore consensus views. Should departmental consensus emerge on the need to revise the wording of the statement, discussion may be adjourned and postponed by seconded motion and majority vote.
b. A final vote on the Statement will be called when (1) such a motion is made and seconded; and (2), a straw poll indicates majority support to end discussion. The final official vote shall then be online and anonymous.
c. A Discretionary Statement requires a majority vote to pass and be posted.
d. The final vote tally shall be recorded at the bottom of the statement in the following format:
