This certificate recognizes students who have acquired expertise in advanced historical research methods, including the writing of a longer piece of original historical research. While all UCI students are eligible for this certificate, it is most tailored to history majors, especially those interested in pursuing a postgraduate degree in history or a related discipline.

Students must complete the following courses and maintain a minimum combined GPA of 3.0. Each course may only be counted towards one certificate, and no substitutions are allowed.

  1. HISTORY 100W Writing About History (any topic)
  2. HISTORY 190 Colloquium (any topic)
  3. HISTORY 193 Advanced Research Seminar I
  4. HISTORY 194 Advanced Research Seminar II

Note: Qualified students may apply to have their Campus-wide or Humanities Honors thesis substitute for History 193 and History 194 if (a) their primary advisor is a member of the history department; and (b) the topic of their thesis is historical.
