Kim Hyesoon, one of Korea's most important and influential contemporary poets, reads from her book Autobiography of Death, winner of The Griffin International Poetry Prize and the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Award. The book presents a sequence of forty-nine poems, one for each day that the soul roams the world after death before entering the cycle of translation, giving voice to those who met unjust deaths during Korea’s violent contemporary history, and revealing what Kim calls “the structure of death, that we remain living in.” Kim is a professor of creative writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts and will read in Korean, with UCI Anthropology Ph.D student Christine Ji-Young Kim providing English translations.
