Soni Kum will present her work, “Morning Dew: The Stigma of Being Brainwashed,” an exhibition currently on display at the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University. Started in 2019-2020, “Morning Dew” is the collaborative effort of artists Soni Kum, Hiroki Yamamoto, Kazuya Takagawa, and Nobuaki Takekawa with curator Yumiko Okada. Based on personal encounters with sixteen Zainichi Korean (ethnic Korean residents in Japan who were repatriated to North Korea and later returned to Japan) “returnees” and their descendants, the exhibition’s three installations evoke and give an aesthetic form to the hidden stories of these former “returnees.” Director Soni Kum will discuss her work on film and video, focused on the Zainichi Korean history and the legacies of Japanese Imperialism and the Cold War.
Soni Kum is an artist working across a variety of media, including film and video, installation, performance, writing, photography, drawing and dance. Kum is a third-generation Zainichi Korean who was born and raised in Tokyo.
Event co-sponsored by the Department of Film and Media Studies, the Center for Critical Korean Studies, the Department of Asian American Studies, and the Department of East Asian Studies.
