Dear Friends of CCKS,
Let's start with the positives! It's been a tremendous year so far at the Center for Critical Korean Studies here at UCI. We began with a bang in October with the Afro-Korean Hip Hop Festival and Conference featuring memorable performances by Tiger JK, Yoonmirae, Bizzy and Kurtis Blow. We were moved by Joseph Juhn's provocative film, "Jeronimo," which chronicled the history of the Korea-Cuban diaspora through one of it most prominent figures. We were provoked by amazing talks by Dongsei Kim, Erica Vogel, David Roh, and our CCKS postdoctoral fellow this year Hye-Kyoung Kwon. We even celebrated the surprise Oscars victory of "Parasite" and at the same time UCI's strength in Korean film studies, complete with bowls of Jjapaguri!
We had wanted to end the year strong with a series of amazing events that I was personally so very excited to share with our community at UCI and in Orange Country in general. But given the serious situation our world currently faces with the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the wise decision by university administration to implement social distancing measures, I am afraid that we have no choice but to cancel the remaining events for the academic year. We will do everything in our power to reschedule them for next year.
But before I sign off for 2019-2020 I wanted to make a special plea for your charity. The Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association is doing important work in combating the spread of COVID-19 in Korea. You can donate here.
Or if you prefer to focus your efforts more locally, the Red Cross is always a good option and you can donate here.
Finally, the CCKS has benefited immensely from the generosity of donors and the support of community partners. As a still relatively new center, we are working hard to put down permanent roots so that we can further our mission of promoting Korean studies in the United States for generations to come.
