At UCI, Ryan studied under Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Studies Amy Powell and wrote his dissertation on urban paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.

"As a Ph.D. student, I feel like I've developed a sense of responsibility to the communities I am a part of: first generation college students, the shrinking middle class, art historians, people who still hold out hope for the promise of higher education in spite of the country's current socioeconomic and cultural challenges. I feel a greater urgency to put my skills and talents to work for these communities than I did before. Additionally, I feel as though my last few years at UCI (particularly as a graduate student researcher in the UCI Humanities Commons) have provided me with the social and intellectual resources to act on that sense of responsibility," said Ryan.
