FMS major Olivia Clark has recently completed an internship through the Television Academy Foundation at Ping Pong Production. Through their internship, Olivia had the opportunity to work alongside post-production and editorial professionals, learning advanced editing techniques and non-linear editing software, like Avid Media Composter, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve. Olivia’s daily duties consisted of supporting Ping Pong Production’s assistant editors and coordinators by managing and organizing working files, making revisions to scripts as needed.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your internship that you're particularly proud of?
Olivia: One major achievement for me during my internship was the first time I was able to transfer footage into AVID Media Composer on my own. This was the first major skill I learned, and gaining the trust and know-how to complete this task by myself was definitely a memorable moment for me in my editing internship.
Which FMS courses or professors have been most influential in preparing you for this internship, and why?
O: I took the entire 120 production series with Professor Elizabeth Cane, and I would definitely say I owe most of what I have learned from the FMS department to her. Cane has for the last year or so given me and the rest of her students the creative freedom to explore all aspects of production and post-production in addition to creating a supportive, feedback rich environment where everyone is always encouraging one another to be better while also acknowledging their successes. Throughout my internship, I found myself referencing the knowledge I gained in these production courses, particularly within post-production and editing.
What advice would you give to FMS students who are looking to secure similar internships in the future?
O: Apply to everything and take every opportunity that comes your way. Don't just aim for the big internships and job opportunities, focus on embracing creative roles with your peers and friends and take every chance you get to learn a new skill, big or small. It all adds up in the end and will eventually prepare you for that big opportunity in the future.
