The symposium takes its title from the concurrent exhibition, Outliers and American Vanguard Art, which explores the little-known intersections between self-taught artists and their formally trained peers.

The primary aim of this symposium is to address and amplify the set of issues related to diversity and difference, and in particular, address histories of overlooked regionalism. This includes a particular focus on the West, Midwest, South, and Southwest United States: inviting a new generation of early mid-career and emerging scholars to present in a subject area that is still largely untouched, and remains understudied by American art historians. Among subjects discussed will be African American art within Alabama, the WPA and Hispano tradition in New Mexico, AfriCOBRA and Imagist histories in Chicago, and Native American Pop Art. Such a rich roster highlights and enriches the existing body of literature on folk, outsider, and untrained artistic practices.

Speakers include: Lynne Cooke (National Gallery of Art), Bridget Cooks (University of California, Irvine), Robert Cozzolino (Minneapolis Institute of the Arts), Rita Gonzalez (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), Suzanne Hudson (University of Southern California), Katherine Jentleson (High Museum of Art), Yael Lipschutz (Loyola Marymount University), Elsa Longhauser (Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles), Ellen Macfarlane (University of Southern California), Tey Marianna Nunn (National Hispanic Cultural Center), Karen Moss (University of Southern California), Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander (Cantor Art Center), Kristine Ronan (Santa Fe, NM), Jenni Sorkin (University of California, Santa Barbara), Lisa Stone (Roger Brown Study Collection), Jason Weems (University of California, Riverside)
