Frank B. Wilderson III, professor and chair of African American studies, has been named a Chancellor’s Professor. This title is bestowed on professors who have demonstrated exceptional academic merit and whose continued promise for scholarly achievement is unusually high.
An award-winning author and scholar, Wilderson’s work has been field-defining. His latest book Afropessimism (W.W. Norton, 2020) blends groundbreaking critical and theoretical reflection with moving passages of memoir and was longlisted for the National Book Award in nonfiction. He is also author of Incognegro: A Memoir of Exile and Apartheid (Duke University Press, 2015) and Red, White & Black: Cinema and the Structure of U.S. Antagonisms (Duke University Press, 2010). Wilderson is known as the scholar most associated with the Afropessimist critical framework and one of the first to articulate that critical perspective in his writing.
