THE CLASSICAL GREEK LITERATURE IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES (14TH – 15THC.)

FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST, THROUGH PALEOGRAPHICAL EVIDENCE

Two milestones are thought to be responsible for the survival of classical Greek literature. The first was the invention of the minuscule script in the 9th century AD.  The second was the invention of typography in the 15th century. However, a third milestone during the 14th-15th century can be considered as important as the previous two, namely the ‘transportation’ of the Classical Greek texts and authors from the East to the West. This talk discusses this third milestone, focusing on cases of contemporary teachers, students, manuscripts, and scholars who left the Greek East for the Hesperia. How did Classical Greek Literature escape the small geographical space of the Eastern Mediterranean and come to receive universal recognition?
