In conversation with Hu Ying (East Asian Studies, UCI), Michael Berry (Professor of Chinese Literature & Film, UCLA) discusses various challenges inside and outside his translation of "Wuhan Diary: Dispatches from a Quarantined City." "Wuhan Diary" is an eyewitness account of the challenges of daily life at the epicenter of the COVID pandemic by the acclaimed Chinese writer Fang Fang. Drawing on his own experience as an award-winning literary translator, Berry offers insight on how to balance translation with original scholarship and how the market for Chinese literature in translation has transformed over the years.
