Before Open Enrollment: A & X restrictions are placed on Writing courses BEFORE open enrollment begins. Once the open enrollment period STARTS, restrictions will be taken off and students should be able to register for classes.
On Day 1 of Instruction: After classes officially start for the quarter, students will need to go through the Composition Waitlist Process in order to enroll in classes.
The online sections that you see are for Cross Campus Enrollment students only.
Towards the beginning of Week 1, it is possible that we'll open one of the online sections to UCI students. However, it is very unlikely, since the courses usually fill up.
We recommend signing up for an in-person section of Writing to ensure you have a Writing course, and then also putting yourself on the waitlist for an online section if one becomes available.
If the class shows as "FULL," unfortunately, you will not be able to enroll at this time.
If the class has 0 spots available, that means the class is not open to student enrollment.
If you cannot get into the class you’d like to register for, enroll in another open section for now and monitor the section you want in case spots open up.
For any classes that appear to be open on WebReg, they are only open to students who are on the Composition internal waitlist. To obtain an authorization code and seat in a writing class, you will need to sign up for the Composition Waitlist and follow the directions on the Composition Program Enrollment Page.
If you are already on our internal waitlist, we will reach out to you via email if we find a seat for you in a writing course. Please make sure to regularly check your UCI email for an email from writing@uci.edu.
If you drop your current section, you will need to sign up for the Composition Program internal waitlist for all writing courses. Since the waitlist tends to be very long, make sure that you stay in your current section while also signing up for the waitlist. There is NO GUARANTEE that you will be able to get into another section, so by remaining in your current section, you are ensuring that you continue to have a seat in a writing class. Do not drop your course unless we give you an add code for a different writing section.
All students need to obtain permission to add writing courses through the Composition Office. You will need to go through the Composition waitlist process (more information is on the Composition Enrollment Page).
Yes! Even if you're not enrolled in a class, feel free to attend the class you are hoping to add for the best chance at getting in. Please note that we cannot guarantee a seat in a WR course to anyone; however, attending helps your chances at getting into a class.
Make sure to talk to the instructor after class so they know you were there. Please also note that you were in attendance when you submit the waitlist google form.
If you get a seat in a writing class, Composition will send you the authorization code to enroll via email, so please look out for a message from writing@uci.edu.
If we are not able to find you a seat, we will not send you an email.
If you don't hear from us by Friday of Week 1 at 4:00pm, you have not gotten a seat in a writing class.
We do not allow anyone to add a writing course past Friday of Week 1. Most instructors have assigned four or five assignments by the beginning of Week 2, and any students who joined the class would be very behind. To give our instructors and students the best chance at success, we have a hard deadline of not adding after Friday of Week 1.
Since the deadline has passed to drop, you will need to fill out an Enrollment Exception to drop your course. You can do this by going to Student Access. For writing classes, you only get ONE Enrollment Exception approval. We will not consider future Enrollment Exception requests.
For all Composition classes, NORs (New Only Restrictions) are put in place for Fall enrollment. NORs allow a select number of spots to be reserved for incoming first year and transfer students. New student registration windows are later, so we keep a certain number of seats available for them. This means that if you are not a first year or transfer student and all regular seats are already taken in a WR section, you will need to choose a different open section to enroll in.
Pleaseinput your 5-digit course code and then input your 4-digit add/drop/change code. That should solve the issue, but if you continue to have difficulty enrolling, feel free to reach out to writing@uci.edu.
As of Fall 2023, there is a new policy stating that Entry Level Writing Requirement classes (WR 40/WR 45) have to be taken for a letter grade and cannot be taken Pass/No Pass. Since WR 50/WR 60 are Lower Division Writing Requirement classes, you are still able to take them P/NP.
