The Task is in the Text: Insights into Text Messaging, Task Design, and Mobile Language Learning
This presentation focuses on technology-mediated language learning, specifically mobile language learning and text messaging for language learning. Particularly, this talk presents an innovative research study on the impact of text messaging on second language oral fluency. Quantitative and qualitative results will be shared, emphasizing insights into the impact of modality on fluency, task design, and the importance of task-technology alignment. In addition, the talk will highlight contributions of this research to the fields of mobile-assisted language learning and technology-mediated task-based language teaching, including practical applications for teaching. The talk will also include how this research can significantly contribute to course offerings within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and foster interdisciplinary collaborations at UC Irvine.
