The Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture offers summer fellowships for graduate students enrolled at UCI whose PhD research is in Persian/Iranian Studies.  Students may be at any level in a PhD program (i.e. the student need not be advanced to doctoral candidacy). Funds should be used from June 1 to September 30, 2016.

Fellowships

Zarrinkelk Family Fellowships supports Humanities PhD students working on Iranian/Persian language(s), history and culture.  Two fellowships of $5,000 each will be awarded.

The Humanities Dean's Gateway Award in Persian Studies supports Humanities PhD students with interest in Persian Studies, broadly construed. The award can support any legitimate aspect of the student's research (travel costs, language study, research materials such as media and/or books, etc.).  One award of $3,000 will be awarded.

The Kamran Peyman Fellowship supports Humanities PhD students with interest in Persian Studies, broadly construed. One fellowship of $2,000 will be awarded.

The Cheryll and Richard Ruszat Award in Iranian Cinema and Arts supports a Humanities PhD student working on Iranian/Persian cinema or arts, including fine arts. History and literature are not eligible for this award.  One graduate student will receive a Ruszat Scholar award of $1,000.

The Hassan, Mahvash & Farzad Milani Fellowship provides one $5,000 award for a graduate student in related fields of Persian culture. The scholarship is limited to minority and foreign born students who have demonstrated financial need.

Application process

To apply, please submit the following materials to Amanda Jeanne Swain at ajswain@uci.edu by April 4:

o A letter no longer than two pages with a description of your research and its current status (i.e., at which stage of research/writing), and expected outcomes for the summer. If you will traveling to conduct research, please specify what archives or other resources you will be using and why these are important to your project. If you will use the award as a summer stipend, explain what library and other resources you will use during the summer and what you expect to produce, e.g., a chapter draft. Please note if your project meets the criteria for the Zarrinkelk, Milani or Ruszat awards.
o A budget (the Humanities Dean's Gateway award can be used for research travel and materials; the Ruszat and Zarrinkelk awards can be used for specific research and travel expenses or as summer stipends for living expenses).
o A current two-page CV.
o For the Milani Fellowship, please provide a statement of financial need identifying all sources of funding for the 2015-2016 academic year and summer 2016.

A letter of support from your faculty advisor confirming how this fellowship will advance your dissertation project should be sent separately to Amanda Jeanne Swain at ajswain@uci.edu by the application deadline.
