Scotty Streitfeld is a Lecturer at UC Irvine, where they teach and read through the lenses of LGBTQ+ studies and Science and Technology Studies. Their classes in composition focus on issues that emerge at the crossroads of identity and technology, particularly in the contexts of speculative media and legal justice. These contexts are diverse, but they demonstrate the rise and increasing centrality of surveillance and control technologies in our everyday lives. Their research shows how these technologies were pivotal for shaping our understanding of normality and the everyday in the twentieth century, and spans across literary texts, media, and scientific writing. Outside the classroom, Scotty is also an amateur animator, roller coaster enthusiast, and a writer of cheesy science fiction. They currently reside in Oceanside, CA, with their life partner and two cats.
Courses Typically Taught:
- Writing 50
- Writing 60
Textbooks Needed:
- My classes generally use branched syllabi, in which students get to pick one of three reading and/or research tracks. For example, in WR 50: Speculative Fiction, students can select readings that focus on gender, sexuality, or reproduction, which includes short fiction from Ursula Le Guin, Samuel Delany, and Octavia Butler respectively. In WR 60, students can research either the front end of the criminal justice system, the corrections system itself, or the reentry process. Readings for these include selections from Elizabeth Hinton, Wendy Sawyer, Peter Wagner, John Pfaff, and others.
