This interactive workshop explores how reflective, portfolio-based writing pedagogies can foster critical engagement with generative AI (GenAI) while mitigating concerns about academic integrity. Participants will examine how peer and AI-assisted feedback loops combined with structured reflection help students develop critical AI literacy by making their uses of AI visible, intentional, and ethically grounded. Drawing on materials from the PAIRR packet, we will consider how reflective portfolio components can incorporate students’ evolving relationships with AI as a writing medium, encouraging deeper metacognitive engagement and rhetorical awareness.

We will discuss classroom designs that move beyond primarily “AI detection” toward pedagogies of dialogue, iteration, and transparency in writing processes. Participants also consider how these practices align with UC Irvine’s portfolio assessment. We will discuss sample ePortfolio prompts from the WR 45/50 and WR 60 General Education writing sequence that invite students to reflect on their writing across contexts and technologies.

By foregrounding reflection as both an assessment practice and a site for critical literacy, PAIRR offers what we hope is a replicable model for writing programs seeking to integrate GenAI into their curricula in ways that sustain learning, creativity, and ethical awareness across disciplines. Participants will leave with sample readings and adaptable prompts to use in their own writing courses.

We hope to see you all next Thursday! If you have any questions about the event, please contact writing@uci.edu.
