Grad SlamThe Humanities Commons Graduate Research Slam (Friday, May 27, 2016) will feature a series of short presentations by UCI graduate students and postdocs about their dissertations. This event invites participants to share their research with each other and the School in a condensed format that presents the larger arc and aims of their research projects.

Students will prepare for the event by participating in several required training sessions. Final presentations will be video-recorded so that we can share graduate education and research at UCI more broadly. At the Slam, each participant will make a 3-5 minute presentation illustrated by 3-5 slides showcasing his or her current research to an audience consisting of fellow graduate students from Humanities and related disciplines, plus faculty, staff, undergraduates, and members of the community.

To share their work at the Research Slam, students must apply and be selected to participate and must commit to attending a linked set of trainings:

1) Power Speech: Public speaking workshop with Professor of Drama Eli Simon
Saturday, January 30, 2016, 1:00-3:00 pm, Humanities Commons Lobby, HG 1100
2) Research Slam Preliminary Rehearsal

3) Research Slam Tech Rehearsal
Several date / time slots, week of May 23
4) Research Slam: Friday, May 27, 4:00-6:00 pm, followed by wine and cheese reception

Graduate students and postdocs who successfully complete the training and presentation requirements of the Research Slam will receive $250 in Humanities Commons research funds (can be used towards travel, books, or other approved research expenses). Program is limited to ten slots.

Background
The program is modelled on the UC-wide Grad Slam, but features humanities research in a collaborative rather than competitive format. We encourage participants in the Humanities Research Slam to also participate in the campus- and UC-wide Slam. (On campus- and UC Grad Slam, contact Megan Story, storym@uci.edu.)
