UCI has been invited by the Mellon Foundation to submit one proposal for a Sawyer Seminar to be held in 2019-2020. The guidelines for submitting a pre-proposal are below and the full internal call is attached. We encourage proposals that build on existing collaborative activities at UCI and demonstrate a multi-disciplinary perspective on the topic. Cecile Whiting and Carol Burke received a Mellon grant award for the very successful Sawyer Seminar “Documenting War” held in 2016-2017. Their proposal grew out of the “War” faculty research residency in 2015-2016. Julia Lupton and I are happy to answer questions and discuss project ideas in advance of the deadline to submit a pre-proposal.
Mellon Sawyer Seminar Proposals | UCI Internal Selection Process
The Mellon Foundation has invited UCI to submit one proposal for a Sawyer Seminar to be held in 2019-2020. The call for proposals is attached. The Sawyer Seminars program was established in 1994 to provide support for comparative research on historical and contemporary topics of major scholarly significance. The seminars provide an opportunity for intensive study of subjects chosen by the participants. Per Provost Lavernia’s authorization, an internal selection process will be coordinated by the Humanities Commons under the direction of Georges Van Den Abbeele, Dean, School of Humanities.
Internal Pre-Proposal deadline: January 15, 2018

Submit a pre-proposal narrative (max 5 pages) outlining the topic of the seminar and including the names of potential collaborators both on and off campus. As you consider possible topics for the pre-proposal, please pay particular attention to the criteria that the Mellon Foundation has articulated for the full-length proposals: (1) the rationale for raising the central questions to be addressed and the potential significance of the inquiry to be pursued; (2) the cases to be studied (e.g., nations, regions, time periods, cultural trends, social tensions) and the perspectives to be brought to bear on them; (3) the thematic “threads” that will run through the seminar; (4) the institution’s resources and suitability for the proposed seminar; and (5) the procedures to be used in selecting graduate and postdoctoral fellows.
The faculty project director(s) for the selected proposal will be notified by January 30. The final proposal must be completed by March 10. Humanities Commons and Dean’s finance staff will work with the project director(s) to develop the project plan and budget, finalize the proposal for Sponsored Projects review and submit to the Mellon Foundation by the application deadline.
