Next Gen PhDThe School of Humanities has been awarded a Next Generation PhD planning grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Grants are “designed to bring together various important constituencies to discuss and strategize, and then to produce plans that will transform scholarly preparation in the humanities at the doctoral level. Students will be prepared to undertake various kinds of careers, and humanities PhD programs will increase their relevance for the twenty-first century.”

The $25,000 NEH grant to SOH – matched by a GSR position funded by Grad Division – will enable us to explore ways to enhance graduate professionalization seminars for larger departments and to design School-wide graduate professionalization seminars for small programs that can leverage a critical mass of students. These courses, as well as the development of mentorship, internship and advising opportunities and practices, will aim to provide consistent and effective preparation for multiple career paths from the beginning of graduate study.  We are putting together a planning committee comprised of faculty, lecturers, graduate students, departmental staff, central administration representatives, PhD alumni and community organization representatives.

Julia Lupton will serve as project director and Amanda Swain will serve as project manager.
