Sustainability Initiative Fellowship on Indigenous Environmental Issues

The Sustainability Initiative is hiring a UCI graduate student fellow to work on indigenous environmental issues. Project focus areas range from global to local and include:

Global: preparation for the World Indigenous Law Conference (UCI, October 2016). Before and during the conference, fellow will assist indigenous-led convening partners in both logistical and substantive matters. Post-conference, fellow will participate in coordination of follow up actions, including coordination of publication of proceedings and papers
State: preparation for indigenous-led convening of California coastal tribal community leaders on state consultation process in conjunction with Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples (UCI, Fall 2016)
Regional: co-coordination of regional tribal community engagement for Sustainability Initiative to ensure identification and meaningful integration of indigenous people, leadership, and issues into the design of UCI's nascent regional climate resilience collaboration efforts and into preparation for the Headwaters to Oceans Conference (UCI, Spring 2017)
Campus: coordination of Sustainability Initiative's nascent collaboration with UCI American Indian Resource Program to co-develop new student opportunities in indigenous environmental scholarship
Community (local to global): Fellow may also provide logistical and substantive support to the Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples, with specific projects to be determined. In addition, fellow may work with Sustainability Initiative to co-develop concept and design of emerging project opportunities with EarthRights International.
Qualifications

UCI graduate student in good standing. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong substantive knowledge and background experience in a wide-range of indigenous environmental and social justice issues. Demonstrated long term commitment to pursuing career in a field related to indigenous environmental issues. Demonstrated experience working in fast-paced, collaborative team settings. Demonstrated experience navigating among multiple worldviews and building alignment among multiple competing project priorities.  Spanish language and graphic and web design experience a plus.

Terms

The successful fellow will serve as a student employee of the Sustainability Initiative, earning $16 per hour. The fellowship will require between 10-15 hours per week during Academic Year 2016-17. Hours are flexible, though the fellowship requires regular presence at the Sustainability Initiative office on campus. Earliest fellowship start date: August 15, 2016; latest fellowship start date: September 15, 2016.

Applications from graduate students who have advanced to candidacy are preferred. If you are already employed in a different paid position on campus, please be aware that university policy states that graduate students may not work more than 50% of full time for the university during the academic year. Please consult the Graduate Division if you are not sure of your eligibility status.
