Welcome to UCI and the School of Humanities!

As a new transfer student, you will be required to complete mandatory academic advising this summer to enroll in courses. Academic advising sessions will be held in-person on the UC Irvine campus throughout June, July, and August. The sooner you complete academic advising, the sooner you will be able to enroll in classes for the fall quarter!

HOW TO COMPLETE ACADEMIC ADVISING

1) ACTIVATE YOUR UCINETID

Your UCInetID will be your login for all online systems at UC Irvine, including Canvas, WebReg (the enrollment system), and more. Your UCInetID also determines your UCI email address.

2) ENROLL IN DUO MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

All students at UC Irvine are required to enroll in Duo as an extra layer of account security when logging into any online system that requires your UCInetID and password.

3) COMPLETE THE HUMANITIES TRANSFER PRE-ADVISING SURVEY BY JULY 1

To access this pre-advising survey, you must set up and log into your Microsoft Office UCI account. You will need to set/change your password first before attempting to log into your Microsoft Office UCI account. NOTE: When logging in, add “ad” to your UCI email address (ex: student@ad.uci.edu).

This pre-advising survey should take 15-20 minutes to complete. Be prepared to submit unofficial transcripts from all colleges you have attended to the Humanities Transfer Pre-Advising Survey. If you are in progress to complete courses for the spring or summer term, please submit an unofficial transcript with your in-progress coursework included. NOTE: This is separate from, and in addition to, the official transcripts you are required to submit to the UCI Office of Undergraduate Admissions. You are still required to send your official documents to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the deadline stated on your Admissions offer.

4) SIGN UP FOR AN IN-PERSON ACADEMIC ADVISING SESSION

After submitting the Humanities Transfer Pre-Advising Survey, you will be sent an email to your UCI email address (Gmail account) within 5 business days (excluding weekends and holidays). This email will contain a direct invite link for you to sign up for an in-person academic advising session.

English majors and Film & Media Studies majors are encouraged, but not required, to sign up for the sessions dedicated entirely to their major. These sessions will feature a guest speaker from the major department.

5) ATTEND YOUR IN-PERSON ACADEMIC ADVISING SESSION

Due to the volume of incoming students, the academic advising session you sign up for will be your only opportunity to meet with a Humanities academic counselor this summer. Our academic advising office is unable to accommodate requests for additional appointments before or after your academic advising session.

Each in-person academic advising session can accommodate approximately 30 students. You may only attend one session. These sessions will consist of an in-depth presentation covering UCI degree requirements and related policies, a review of the UCI Schedule of Classes and WebReg, and a one-on-one meeting with a Humanities academic counselor to review your specific requirements, transfer coursework applicability, and course recommendations for the fall quarter.

To ensure success during this session, be prepared with any questions you may have and plan to take notes. During this session, and after your one-on-one meeting with a Humanities counselor, the hold on your record will be removed, allowing you to enroll in fall courses. You will enroll in your fall quarter courses during the advising session.

Please review the following session dates and times. Note that all sessions will begin promptly at the scheduled time and end at the scheduled time. You are expected and required to be present for the entire duration of the in-person session (3 hours and 30 minutes).

Please read the following information:

Location and Parking
After signing up for an academic advising session, you will receive a confirmation email with details on the session’s location and parking information.

Policy on Late Arrivals
You must arrive on time. Make sure to plan sufficient time for traffic, paying for parking, and finding the room. Due to the significant amount of information covered, students who arrive late to a session may not be allowed to attend the session and, instead, will need to reschedule for a future session.

Guest Policy
Family members or other guests may not attend the advising session. If you require special assistance and need someone to accompany you, please contact the Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study in advance to make arrangements.

*Exceptions
Attendance at an academic advising session is mandatory. If for some reason you are unable to attend an in-person session (for example, you live outside of the U.S. and will not be arriving to California until all the in-person sessions are over), please indicate this in the Humanities Transfer Pre-Advising Survey to receive additional information on petitioning for an exception to complete advising online. Please review additional details under the Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) section at the bottom of this page (see Academic Advising).

ENSURING SUCCESS DURING ACADEMIC ADVISING

Please be sure to do the following before your academic advising session:

Take Any Necessary Placement Tests
As a Humanities major, you are required to complete two years of college-level language other than English (or show equivalent competence). If you completed the fourth semester of a college-level language other than English with a grade of C or better, that would satisfy the requirement. If you have Advanced Placement (AP) credit, please refer to the Advanced Placement Chart in the UCI General Catalogue to determine if you have completed the requirement. Otherwise, please review the language placement information on the Humanities Languages website or use the Language Placement Chart as you may need to take a language placement exam. Visit the UCI Testing Center website to register for a summer placement exam.

Review Campus, School, and Major Requirements
The 2026-2027 UCI General Catalogue will be available online in early July. The Catalogue contains valuable information about UCI, your academic field, and UCI's policies and regulations. You are responsible for knowing and adhering to the policies contained in the Catalogue.

View the New Student Handbook
The New Student Handbook is a great introduction to UCI and will help ensure that you complete everything required of new students.

Check Your UCI Email
You will be notified when your UCI email account is available. Be sure to check it regularly throughout the summer for important messages. If you have any questions about your account, please visit the Office of Information Technology (OIT) website.

Check Your UCI Applicant Portal
Be sure to check your UCI Applicant Portal regularly for Admissions updates.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (F.A.Q.)

Academic Advising

Yes. Completing academic advising is mandatory for all new transfers. All students are required to do so before they can enroll in classes.

No, academic advising is free.

Make sure you arrive to campus early to allow time for paying for and finding parking, as well as finding the room for the academic advising session. Come prepared with any questions you have and be prepared to take notes.

As a Humanities major, you are required to complete two years of a college-level language other than English (or show equivalent competence). If you have not done that, you may need to take a language placement exam. Visit the UCI Testing Center website to register for a summer placement exam.

Yes. You are required to send official transcripts to the UCI Office of Undergraduate Admissions and submit unofficial transcripts to the Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study within the Humanities Transfer Pre-Advising Survey.

Orientation for new transfer students is a set of online modules through Canvas that are mandatory to complete. TSPOP is an optional in-person orientation program. These orientation programs, run by UCI Orientation, are designed to help new transfer students make a smooth transition to life at UCI and does not include academic advising or course registration. Academic advising consists of a mandatory advising session with a counselor that includes an overview of degree requirements and academic policies, and recommendations for fall quarter courses.

Yes. In addition to signing up for and attending TSPOP, you must also complete mandatory academic advising with the School of Humanities in order to enroll in courses for the fall. Instructions for completing this mandatory academic advising are outlined at the top of this page and advising sessions will take place throughout June, July, and August.

Attendance at an advising session is mandatory. If for some reason you are unable to attend an in-person session (for example, you live outside of the U.S. and will not be arriving to California until all the sessions are over), please indicate this in the Humanities Transfer Pre-Advising Survey to receive additional information on petitioning for an exception to complete advising online. Exceptions require documentation and are not guaranteed to be approved. Once granted access to the request form, please submit this form as early in the summer as possible.

In lieu of attending an in-person advising session, students approved for an exception will be required to complete an online Canvas course and attend the online/Zoom advising session on August 13 from 4:00pm-6:30pm (Pacific Time). An invitation to complete our online Canvas course will be sent to you 2 weeks prior, on July 30. To receive the Zoom link for this online/Zoom advising session, you must complete our online Canvas course first. The course will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete and must be completed no later than the day prior to attending our online/Zoom advising session.

During this online/Zoom advising session, and after your one-on-one meeting with a Humanities counselor, the hold on your record will be removed, allowing you to enroll in fall courses. You will enroll in your fall quarter classes during the online/Zoom advising session.

Enrolling in Classes

You can begin enrolling in classes during your advising session. The sooner you complete your advising, the sooner you will be able to enroll in classes.

We will discuss your degree requirements and a recommended fall schedule during the academic advising session, based on the coursework you have previously completed.

All new transfer students begin their career at UCI with an academic hold. Once you complete academic advising this summer, the hold will be removed, allowing you to enroll in classes.

The UCI Office of Undergraduate Admissions may also place a hold on your record if you do not submit your transcripts and/or test scores by the deadlines posted. Please check your UCI Applicant Portal page or contact the UCI Office of Undergraduate Admissions if this is the case.

Changing Majors

On the Humanities Transfer Pre-Advising Survey, be sure to note the major you would like to change to. We will approve your change of major request when you attend your academic advising session. You can find a list of all Humanities majors on the Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study website.

You must contact the School that offers the major you are interested in changing to. They will let you know if you are eligible to change your major. If you are not eligible to change, you must either keep your current Humanities major or change to a different Humanities major. You will then still be required to complete Humanities academic advising, adhere to all Humanities policies, and take classes for your current Humanities major even if you are still hoping to eventually change majors.

Other

Yes. Please see the Summer Session website for additional information. If you would like to discuss enrolling in Summer Session II, be sure to sign up for a June or July advising session.

Please check your UCI Applicant Portal page or contact the UCI Office of Undergraduate Admissions with any questions about your admissions status.
