Indigenous Innovation Film Screening - Maathaaw: The Fire Within Us

As California experiences unprecedented wildfires, experts are pointing to factors like climate change, aging infrastructure, and poor forest management practices as root causes. Now, state and federal regulators are turning to Tribal Nations and their extensive bodies of traditional knowledge for innovative solutions to better manage forests and wilderness areas. Maathaaw: The Fire Within Us shows how Southern California Tribal Nations, exercising their sovereignty, are expanding cultural burn practices on their aboriginal lands to help alleviate California’s wildfire danger and properly care for forest and wilderness areas. Please join us for a film screening and panel discussion with the filmmaker, Tribal leaders, and Indigenous scholars.
