The States of Korean Adoption: A Symposium will host a Book Reading & Discussion with Maja Lee Langvad. Renowned poet and Korean-Danish adoptee, Maja Lee Langvad will read from her award-winning book HUN ER VRED (She is Angry, 그 여자는 화가 난다), a critical story of transnational adoption based on her own experiences. The Korean translation appeared in 2022 and the reading will take place in Danish, Korean, and English.

Conversation led by Eleana Kim, Professor of Anthropology at UCI and Mette A.E. Kim-Larsen, PhD Student in Anthropology at UCI.

This symposium considers the world’s longest-running and largest transnational adoption program. Bringing together scholars and activists from Denmark, Sweden, Australia, the UK, the U.S., and South Korea, it reflects upon the states of South Korean transnational adoption: from its historical formation and current political, economic, and social conditions to its future relations with the South Korean nation and state.
