The German Department offers courses in German language, history, literature and culture. Our courses teach students critical thinking, help them navigate questions of cultural exchange, and contextualize the German speaking world in a European and global context. The ability to speak German and demonstrate a competency in the cultures of Austria, Germany and Switzerland, will benefit those students seeking career opportunities in international and governmental organizations, politics, engineering, bio-medical research, economics, fashion and art. Germany is geographically located in the heart of Europe and is a major economic and political player in the European Union, and a world leader in industries such as engineering, chemical and medical research, and green technologies. Given that German is spoken by over 100 million people, and is the third largest exporter and importer in the world, a German major or minor can open many exciting career paths.

Study Abroad
The University of California offers as part of its large and successful Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) numerous options for Study Abroad in Germany. UCEAP has programs for all levels of language competency from absolute beginner to advanced student, for undergraduates and for graduate students. UCEAP is solely intended for UC students, and the courses students take abroad automatically earn them UC credit.
In addition to UCEAP programs, the UCI Study Abroad Center has information on programs connected to other institutions and will advise you on applying for those programs and receiving UCI credit for courses taken through them.
Mirasol Travel Award
Students of German may apply for the Mirasol Travel-Study Award for travel to a German-speaking country in an approved program of study. The Mirasol award is made possible by the generous giving of Alumna Kendra Leindecker Mirasol (B.A., UCI German, 1988, and MBA, University of Chicago, 1993). The call for the Mirasol Award is sent out each spring, and students may apply for funding for the following summer or academic year. Awardees are announced at the spring end-of-year awards ceremony.
