Biography
I am always proud to tell people that I am from South Central Los Angeles. Having lived in both Compton and Watts, two heavily Latino and African American communities known for poverty and crime inspires me. I am living proof that anything is possible with a good support system. As a Mexican-American and a History major, I have begun to examine the relationship between my people and the state of California, and it has often been a relationship of conflict. As a History Ph.D. student at UC Irvine, my goal is to create role models for Latinos/as/x and Chicanos/as/x in higher education. Pursuing this field of study will give me the tools to educate the youth on how these relationships we have now have been shaped by our history and how we can make them better.
