Medical Terminology goes Online
Classic 10 is moving online! Due to increasing student demand, the Classics Department is offering the very popular Classic 10: Medical Terminology as a synchronous online course starting winter quarter 2027. This version of the course will offer students the best of both worlds—the experience of in-person instruction and the flexibility of playback for students whose work/class schedules vary. As such, this course is well suited to a variety of UCI students: those generally interested in medical terminology, Humanities students who are minoring in Medical Humanities, and STEM majors seeking to enter the field of medicine. This is one of our lower-division courses that interfaces the Humanities and the Sciences in mutually beneficial ways.
The course teaches students how to analyze the etymological components of medical terms by introducing them to ancient Greek and Latin roots (no experience with either Greek or Latin is necessary). Additionally, students learn about the history of medicine across different geographical regions and discuss issues of inequity and bias still prevalent in the medical field. The course fills up quickly, so make sure to enroll as soon as you can!
