Yellowness: Cinematic Regimes of Race Between Japan and Brazil

André Keiji Kunigami, Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies at UC Irvine, discusses his forthcoming book Yellowness, which studies how film and photography produced yellowness as a racial category between twentieth-century Japan and Brazil. Drawing on 1930s eugenic photography, midcentury avant-garde cinema, and the erotic genre of pornochanchada, the book uncovers an Asian–Latin American cinematic regime that links race, gender, and the body.
