One of the unique benefits of studying at UC Irvine is exposure to the multicultural “global village” that surrounds campus. Global Literacies is a series of thematic course offerings in our Multilingual/Academic English program that provides international students the added benefit of learning about some of the cultures that contribute to the economy and global diversity of the city of Irvine, all while enhancing their academic literacy skills.
In 2026-27, we are excited to announce the offering of Global Literacies courses focusing on Iranian American culture. In these courses, students will:
- Analyze Irvine and Orange County’s diverse communities, focusing on Iranian-American contributions through Persian culture, heritage, businesses, and professional leadership.
- Research, evaluate, summarize, integrate, and synthesize a variety of sources to examine local and global cultural perspectives, drawing insights from Iranian/American guest speakers and field trips to Iranian local organizations and thriving businesses.
- Write a research paper demonstrating critical thinking, intercultural competence, and academic literacy by drawing on students’ multilingual and multicultural identities as assets to reflect on the cultural and global diversity of Irvine.
