THE CASE FOR and against A PHILOSOPHICAL LIFE
Three ethical theories currently dominate academic philosophy: Kantianism, which
demands respect for human dignity, Utilitarianism, which tell us to produce the greatest
good for the greatest number, and Virtue Ethics, which exhorts us to exercise courage,
justice and moderation. Open Socrates introduces a fourth: Socratic Intellectualism,
which exhorts a person to organize her life around the pursuit of knowledge.
Professor Anastasia Berg (UC Irvine) will interrogate Professor Agnes Callard (University of Chicago) who will, in reply, be channeling the hero of her new book: Open Socrates, The Case for a Philosophical Life.
Books will be for sale and Professor Callard will be signing books starting at 2:30pm and after the event.
Please RSVP (see button above text).
