Dr. Maxwell Greenberg will present his ethnographic and archival research on historic, western Jewish cemeteries, and the intimacies between US and Jewish nationalisms in the Arizona-Sonora borderlands. He will discuss the foundational relationship between the creation of Jewish religious spaces and US settler colonialism in the American West, before turning to the religious and racial politics of preserving and maintaining “Jewish Pioneer Cemeteries” today.
Max Greenberg a writer and scholar of social and religious movements, racial identity and US empire. He has published on
western Jewish cultural memory, histories of the Jewish Left, and is currently working on a project about the sanctuary movement
in the Rio Grande Valley, TX. He is an Assistant Professor of American Studies at Goucher College in Baltimore, MD.
